What is the 4 1/4" x 2 1/4" x 3/4" Walnut Base?

4 1/4" x 2 1/4" x 3/4" Walnut Base (ZX4): a plaque where Solid walnut with a deep natural grain and a hand-finished surface does most of the work. It measures 4 1/4".

Walnut is the darkest of the common domestic hardwoods, which gives engraving somewhere to sit. Grain varies piece to piece. An argument for it, not against it, on an award meant to feel individual.

Wall-mounted recognition stays visible to everyone who walks past, not just the recipient. Laser engraving produces a near-black mark against the walnut, one of the highest-contrast wood results available.

Gift tier. The economics stop being about impressions and start being about the specific relationships you spend it on. Concretely: $20.70 each at 1-11, $12.83 at 500+.

Decoration options

The decoration method is chosen to match the substrate, which is why the mark is permanent rather than printed on top of it. Standard imprint area on this item is 2.75 in x 1 in.

Laser Engraving

A focused laser removes the surface layer to expose the substrate beneath. A permanent, high-contrast, single-color mark with no ink involved.

Best for

Logos, names, dates and fine text. The default choice when the mark has to outlive the campaign.

Color

Single color: the natural color of the material under the surface.

UV Printing

UV-cured ink is jetted directly onto the product and cured instantly under ultraviolet light. Full-color, photographic-quality artwork with hard edges and no dot gain.

Best for

Multi-color logos, gradients, photographs and exact brand-color matching.

Color

Full color, including white ink on dark substrates.

Artwork requirements

  • A 300 dpi raster at the actual imprint dimensions will run cleanly. Anything pulled from a web page usually will not.
  • Vector artwork (.ai, .eps, .pdf or .svg) reproduces best at every size and is what we ask for first.
  • Artwork we redraw stays on file under your item number, so the next order runs from the same corrected file.
  • If the logo is only available as a bitmap, we need it at 300 dpi or better at final size, ideally on a transparent background.
  • Nothing is produced before you approve a proof in writing. That is a hard rule, not a courtesy.

Common uses

Service awardsService awards is where this earns its cost, and where buyers re-order it.
Donor recognitionA natural fit for donor recognition, which is one of the settings this plaque was specified for.
Sponsor and partner recognitionWorks well for sponsor and partner recognition, where the plaque format does what a printed handout cannot.
Service anniversariesFive, ten and twenty years. The object marks the span in a way a announcement never manages.
Remote team welcome kitsShipped to a home address, which for a distributed team is the only physical touch the company gets.
Sponsorship and partner thanksGiven to the people who funded or enabled the work, in a form they can keep visible.
Team and department awardsRecognizing a group without the cost or ceremony of individual crystal for every person.
Internal contests and incentivesA tangible prize outperforms a gift card for exactly the reason you would expect. It stays on the desk.

Where this works best

The same item lands differently depending on who gets it and why. Here is how this one performs across the programs it sells into most.

1

Faith & Community Organizations

Faith communities give to mark moments rather than to advertise. Baptisms, confirmations, ordinations, volunteer milestones and building dedications all call for keepsakes carrying a name and a date. Understated decoration outperforms bold branding almost every time in this segment. Wall-mounted recognition stays visible to everyone who walks past, not just the recipient. The gesture is the product here. Spend the thought, not just the budget.

2

Sports Leagues, Tournaments & Clubs

Sport needs volume, deadlines and a clear hierarchy of awards. Awards are read as a hierarchy whether or not you intended one. If the participation piece and the champion piece look similar, the champion feels short-changed, and that is remembered longer than the result. Laser engraving produces a near-black mark against the walnut, one of the highest-contrast wood results available. At $20.70 before breaks, name the recipients rather than filling a table.

3

Employee Recognition & Service Awards

Recognition fails when the object does not match the words. Consistency is what makes a recognition program credible. If a ten year award looks better this year than it did last year, everyone who got last year's version notices. Lock the specification and the supplier, and treat the item list as something you change deliberately rather than annually. The plaque format earns its place here on keep-rate rather than headline price. This reads as a gift. Give it to people you chose, not people who walked past.

4

Nonprofit & Fundraising

Every pound spent on a donor gift is a pound not spent on the mission, so the gift has to earn it. Recognition pieces for major donors and board members are the clearest win: they are relatively few, they are highly personal, and they materially affect renewal. For event merchandise, price the item to sell rather than to give. Worth personalising individually at this price; the response rate justifies it.

5

Education, Schools & Universities

Education buys in waves: orientation, homecoming, graduation, staff appreciation. Departments buy separately even when the brand is shared, which is how a university ends up with nine versions of its own crest. A single approved item list with locked artwork solves more than any individual purchasing decision will. Walnut is the darkest of the common domestic hardwoods, which gives engraving somewhere to sit. $20.70 before breaks puts this above hand-out territory. Use it that way.

6

Government, Military & First Responders

This segment is precise about protocol and unforgiving about quality. Protocol governs the object. Placement of insignia, order of precedence on a plaque and the wording of a commendation are conventions rather than preferences, and getting them wrong is the one error this segment does not overlook. Reserve this for the shortlist and the response changes noticeably.

What do buyers ask about ZX4?

Is there a setup charge?

There is no setup charge, ever. Art preparation, machine setup and the proof are part of the price on this page. Engraving is a separate line, shown per quantity in the cost table on this page, so the all-in figure is visible before checkout. Ground freight is free on orders over $250.

Do you keep this item in stock?

Yes. The warehouse shows more than 1,000 of ZX4 in stock as of the last hourly sync. If a color is short we say so the day you order rather than the week before the deadline. Standard production is 3 to 5 business days after proof approval, then 1 to 5 business days of ground transit.

How long does production take?

Standard production is 3 to 5 business days after proof approval, then 1 to 5 business days of ground transit. The clock starts when you approve the proof, not when you place the order. A free digital proof comes back within one business day of usable artwork, and nothing is produced until you approve it in writing. A rush is quoted per job, with the date confirmed in writing before you pay.

What happens if something arrives damaged?

We replace damaged pieces. Send a photograph and the item number within 10 days of delivery and we handle the carrier claim ourselves. If the box arrives visibly damaged, write that on the freight bill before signing. The replacement runs from the artwork you already approved, so it matches the rest of the order.

How should this be cared for?

Dust with a dry cloth. Keep out of direct sun and away from radiators. ZX4 measures 4 1/4" and is made of walnut. Walnut is the darkest of the common domestic hardwoods, which gives engraving somewhere to sit. We keep the approved artwork on file against the item number, so a re-order runs from the same file.

Can you work to a fixed in-hand date?

Yes, and it is the right way to brief us. Tell us the date the box has to be open rather than the date you want it shipped, and checkout works the schedule backwards from there. It refuses a date it cannot keep rather than accepting it and missing it. Standard production is 3 to 5 business days after proof approval, then 1 to 5 business days of ground transit.

Can I mix colors or sizes to reach a quantity break?

Yes, provided the artwork stays the same across the run. Different artwork is fine as well: it gets its own proof, and setup stays free. Price breaks on this item fall at 1-11, 12-23, 24-47, 48-95, 96-249, 250-499, 500+. The published ladder on ZX4 runs from $20.70 a piece at 1-11 down to $12.83 at 500+, about 38% less per piece.

What is the minimum order for ZX4?

ZX4 can be ordered from a single piece. The published ladder on ZX4 runs from $20.70 a piece at 1-11 down to $12.83 at 500+, about 38% less per piece. There is no setup fee at any quantity. The personalization area on ZX4 is 2.75 in x 1 in.
